Medicare currently provides partial rebates for psychological services, up to 20 sessions per calendar year.

In order to be eligible for this Medicare rebate, you need to obtain a referral called a “Mental Health Care Plan” from your GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist.

Your doctor will require at least half an hour to discuss the referral and complete the paperwork, therefore you may need to schedule a long consultation. After the first six sessions, your doctor will review your progress and determine your eligibility for more sessions (up to a maximum of 20 sessions per year).
